Alternatives to Adobe

We have an Oracle db with a front end GUI written in Power Builder. There is a Batch Job that creates PDF's from documents generated by the system. We're using Adobe 5.0.5 and the Batch Processor PC is runing NT Server.
The Batch uses a start date and will generate PDF's for docs created from that date forward.

The problem we're having is that the PC runs out of memory somewhere around 750 docs (give or take).
At the moment, only the Writer is installed on the PC. If I install the Reader, then the Batch Job will not only create the PDF's, but open every one of them to the screen.

While the developers are busy spinning their wheels I thought I'd ask the PDF pro's here for a little assistance.

1) Any thoughts on why the memory leak is happening and how we can cure it?

2) Can you recommend an alternative to Adobe that would work in a similar manner? And preferrably NOT couse an out of memory error?

Thanks folks!

What are the documents generated by the system?
Do they contain formatting or images?
If not, there are several ways to generate PDFs - from text. My xtopdf toolkit is one of them. See the 2nd URL below and some recent posts (within the last two weeks) on my blog, 3rd URL below.
