Vista success and image compression problem

Submitted by preahkumpii on Tue, 2007-10-16 16:55.

I am running Vista Home Premium. PDFCreator 0.9.3 would not work. It would install after I set the installer compatibility mode to Windows XP SP2, but it would simply not create a pdf. It would print, but the dialog box for document properties/save/etc. would never come up. So, I installed 0.9.4 RC1 and got the same error message as described here. Once I got rid of this message, the program worked okay. There are a few of problems, though.
1. I am trying to print a MS Word 2007 document. MS Word 2007 has the ability to add shadows to images the user inserts. Well, sensing a problem, I tested the image compression and resolution options for PDF. I found out that PDFCreator only resamples the images that DO NOT HAVE any shadows made with MS Word. The the images with shadows applied remain at original resolution, which is bad, because it results in a much larger PDF file size.
2. When, in MS Word, I print manually using the PDFCreator printer, or use the shell integration in Windows Explorer, the printing occurs and the program apparently sends the file to the queue of PDFCreator. However, PDFCreator does not open automatically at this point. I have to open PDFCreator manually and I find the document in the queue and the save/options dialog opens immediately.
3. This could be my misunderstanding of the whole PDF creation process. When in the PDF options, I set the resolution of the PDF, it does not affect in any way the resolution of the PDF that I can tell. I am NOT talking about the "compress text" or "compress images" in the compression tab, but the resolution setting in the General Options in the PDF file type. I have noticed this seemingly purposeless setting in other PDF printing programs as well. Any explanation for that?

Last, I want to say I really like this program. I have been looking for a REAL alternative to Acrobat distiller and this seems to be it. All that is needed now is the ability to edit PDF's (combine, extract, forms, bookmarks, links, etc., etc.) and the program would be full featured. Thanks a lot for the program!
